Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH)
DQSH is a storytime like no other, founded by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions in San Francisco. A much needed safe space for both drag queens and children to enter the magical world of storytime. The sessions are run and delivered by drag queens in LA, New York and San Francisco within libraries, schools and bookstores. “DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models.”
2017 saw the launch of Drag Queen Story Time in Bristol, set up by Tom Canham “For me the project is about drag queens providing fun and inclusive reading for children about issues around misogyny, homophobia, racism, LGBTQ and gender fluidity in a way which they can understand.”

The Bethel Doula Service
The Bethel Doula service is one strand of work delivered by Bethel Health and Healing Network in Birmingham. Set up to “...provide support to vulnerable and isolated pregnant women in Birmingham during their pregnancies, their childbirth and after their babies have been born.” This fantastic service is delivered by a complimentary mix of both professional and voluntary doulas, some of whom have lived experience of these types of services. They exist to put those most in need of these types of services, particularly those who are often disenfranchised in communities and wider society, those who may experience alienation or otherwise may find it difficult to access such services.
“People of all faiths, races and cultures are welcome, (without any fear of discrimination) to the services we offer.”

The Mother House Studios
The Mother House Studio model was set up in late 2016 by the Procreate Project, for artists who are mothers, in an effort to provide an all encompassing space to work and nurture little ones. It is the perfect space for creatives, freelancers and the likes of entrepreneurs who seek a supportive network, environments to collaborate and engage in professional development. Currently they are located in London Waterloo, Stroud and the White House in Dagenham and are in the process of designing national pilots to take further afield.
“Crucially, children learn about women's roles outside the domestic environment ...The model is a creative yet radical solution to a proven lack of viable provision that sufficiently supports the professional development and well-being of emerging artists during pregnancy and motherhood.”

Pop up Parks
“Pop up Parks is a non-for-profit organisation offering services across public engagement, design intervention and speaking and writing areas.” Set up initially in 2014 to fund project ideas in Lambeth and Southwark to tackle health and well-being challenges. The organisation continues to be inspired by a fast growing global movement bringing imagination, creativity and fun outdoors in unconventional ways within urban built-up areas. According to Play England, only 21% of children in the UK play outdoors in comparison to a more optimistic figure of 71% for their parents. Pop -Up Parks provide the opportunity for whole communities to access open spaces in alternative and exciting ways.

It is now a national model in education, youth and community development offering a plethora of workshops, programmes and intergenerational community programmes.
"An all-encompassing, all-hands-on-deck, anti-poverty effort that is literally saving a generation of children.”

The Brutalist Playground
Assemble worked in collaboration with artist Simon Terrill to create the Brutalist Playground: an immersive installation that recreated a trio of post-war play structures out of foam.
Designed for the Architecture Gallery at the RIBA, the Brutalist Playground consisted of full size fragments of three distinctive London housing estates: Churchill Gardens in Pimlico, the Brownfield Estate in Poplar, and the Brunel Estate in Paddington. Recasting these concrete and steel playground structures in reconstituted foam allows people to consider their formal characteristics separately from their materiality, and in doing so allow them to be reappraised as places for children to play.

Reggio Emilia Approach
The Reggio Emilia Approach is an educational philosophy based on the child as a subject of rights who learns and grows through relationships with others. The principles state that children must have some control over the direction of their learning, be able to learn through experiences of touching, moving, listening, and observing; and have endless ways and opportunities to express themselves.
"Much of the instruction at Reggio Emilia schools takes place in the form of projects where they have opportunities to explore, observe, hypothesise, question, and discuss to clarify their understanding." - Forman, G. (ed. Constructivism: Theory, Perspectives, and Practice)

Capital of Children
The Danish town of Billund was established as the Capital of Children by Billund Municipality and the LEGO Foundation in 2012, designed as a place where children can learn through play and become creative citizens of the world. A unique Lego house is currently being built there, and the 40-year-old Billund library is being modernised to become a place where children can crawl and climb over the bookshelves, encouraging experimentation, creativity and physical expression through adventures in learning.
We love this project because it explores how we might design a town on children’s terms, with the intent of creating a good place to grow up.

Playing Out CIC
Playing Out is a Community Interest Company set up to activate street play across the UK. Their website acts as a free resource for anyone who wants children to be able to play out in the streets where they live. It encourages tiny things, like leaving your front door open and saying hi to a neighbour, as well as big community action, like opening up your street for play!
We love this project because 'playing out' allows children to have the space they need to play energetically without being far from home, allowing for semi-supervised play and creating an increase community cohesion.
