City Camp Birmingham

Birmingham is an archetype of the future that UK cities are facing. Its levels of economic disadvantage, material deprivation and health inequality are clear indicators of this impending reality. These challenges provide the opportunity and necessity for disruptive innovation, and with one of the youngest and most diverse populations in Europe, Birmingham is well placed to completely reimagine itself and forge revolutionary new solutions.

City Camp is an open festival, bringing together pioneering ideas from across the world. Exploring the theme of city futures and ultimately the future of Birmingham in its first year, the open programme recognises that we all have a role to play in feeding into the city's dialogue and unleashing positive solutions.

2016's event was a prototype for an annual festival of ideas.

You didn't just attend City Camp, you created it.

Thank you for joining us as curator, host, participant, investor, community member and citizen to inspire, debate and explore. Powered by Impact Hub Birmingham, the first City Camp Brum presented a broad array of events 31st May - 16th June 2016, and we invited you to curate things that are important to you in the form of a talk, workshop, dinner and more. Here, we have collected some of the outcomes.

The Story So Far

Having seen TEDxBrum build over the last 5 years, its open-minded curiosity has cultivated dynamic communities, bringing together 1000s of passionate citizens and leading to the creation of Impact Hub Birmingham.

FutureShift Festival and the Demo.B season were examples of how much these points of inspiration were not just leading to important conversations, but also bringing people together to actively demonstrate ways in which these sparks could be used collectively in order to build a better Birmingham together. People were moved to act and have since begun to build movements within the city, and ideas like #RadicalChildcare, #DemoDev and many more are now live projects where Birmingham is leading the way in different fields.

We took time to reflect about what’s next and how we continue to build momentum for change in the city. In 2016 we piloted the first City Camp event, revolving around the energy of TEDxBrum #PowerOfUs to harness the collective energy generated. The event was designed to open conversation, encourage exchange and provide spaces to create and build.

We are passionate about growing these interventions outwards beyond the city centre, stretching across the city and reaching more voices than ever before, and will continue to develop this year by year.
