Trade School Digbeth: What Makes A Great Photo?

Join photographer Thom Bartley for a workshop on What Makes a Great Photo

In this class you will learn about what it is that makes a great photo. Too often people interested in learning photography start off by trying to learn how to operate a camera instead of learning how to take a good photo. Unlike most photography classes this Trade School will focus less on the technical side of camera operation and more on what it is that makes photos interesting, inspiring and / or beautiful.

The Trade School will start off by looking at photos from history of all different types and styles including landscape, street, portraiture and journalism and ask participants to think about what it is that makes a photograph “good”.

The second half of the session will involve each participant being given a quick brief to go and take a photo before we come back together to discuss what we all shot.
So whether you’re an aspiring Ansel Adams wanting to trek into the wilderness and capture amazing landscape photos, a wannabe Henri Cartier Breton wanting to grab interesting street shots or just someone who wants to learn how to take nice photos of their family on holiday this trade school will help you to think about what will make you get the best possible shots the next time you click the shutter button. Please bring along a camera of any type with you to this class.

About Trade School

The Trade School network is a collective of self-organised barter-for-knowledge schools across the world. Trade School began in January 2009 as an experiment by a group of artists in New York City who wanted to celebrate local wisdom, mutual respect, and the social nature of exchange.

Trade School Digbeth is a local chapter of this initiative driven by the Impact Hub Birmingham community and friends. For more info and other upcoming Trade School classes, click here.
