Trade School Digbeth: Emergent Design

Join Lorna Prescott for a session on Emergent Design

In a Medium post on design, Jennifer English Morgan suggests that Emergent Design harnesses a desire many of us have to live more intentionally and purposefully by:

“emphasising conscious engagement, and the exploration and refinement of self. Through engaging consciously, we become an alert observer of our experience and an active participant in the process.

Design choices are explicit interactions with the world around us. At the core of design is an intervention within a specific system, with the intent of manifesting or tracking a particular outcome, by using and monitoring an appropriate process unique to the situation.
The process of Emergent Design creates awareness and agility, enabling people to gain more skill in embracing life’s uncertainties.”

This Trade School class is for everyone; from people who feel they have little or no knowledge of design to experienced designers. It is an opportunity to learn from each other and about ourselves. Together we’ll explore some different approaches to design and choose some topics to dive into (for example invisible structures, your inner landscape, principles which support regenerative design). Lorna will share knowledge nuggets, principles and frameworks, and a multitude of links you can check out after the class.

Barter Items to bring for Lorna:
Trade school runs on barter and rather than a monetary exchange. Lorna, the teacher of this class has requested one of the following:

  • Yummy fresh vegetables or herbs
  • A sketch pad
  • Lentils
  • Seeds to grow herbs for making teas
  • A delicious vegan recipe
  • A second hand fiction book that you think is a fabulous read

A little more about Lorna:

Lorna works in Dudley, with a team she has brought together to form a social lab located in the premises of
gather coffee shop on the High Street of Dudley town centre. The lab is experimenting with platforms to connect local creatives and people with practical skills and knowledge. The team are interested in relationships which nurture individual and collective resilience and grow the commons – so that increasingly resources are produced and shared collectively. In 2018 Lorna embarked on a learning journey to find out more about permaculture and social systems design. This Trade School class shares content from courses she is currently taking.

Book your free ticket here. Please do only book if you are sure you able to attend this session.

About Trade School
The Trade School network is a collective of self-organised barter-for-knowledge schools across the world. Trade School began in January 2009 as an experiment by a group of artists in New York City who wanted to celebrate local wisdom, mutual respect, and the social nature of exchange.

Trade School Digbeth is a local chapter of this initiative driven by the Impact Hub Birmingham community and friends. For more info and other upcoming Trade School classes, click here.
