Screening: Kenbe Fem

Kenbe Fem: a Haitian story of survival, unity and strength

Set in the wake of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Kenbe Fem follows David Pierre-Louis in his search to find his mother after the tragedy. But even more – it’s a story of enduring love, strength, and resilience. As audiences witness this incredible story of hope, learn how this tragedy is transformed into a call for action – to work in concert with Haitian communities towards sustainable prosperity in the country’s economy.

Social impact leaders, friends of Haiti, members of the Diaspora, and all those interested in learning about how they can contribute to this growing cause are invited to participate in viewing Kenbe Fem, a story that serves as a profound reminder of the power that one person can have to make radical positive change. You can watch the trailer here: www.kenbe-fem.com

Kenbe Fem, roughly translated as “to hold firm”, is a common phrase in Haitian culture. This documentary was entitled Kenbe Fem to represent the resilience of the Haitian community. Despite all that Haiti has been through over the past two centuries, to “hold firm” was most relevant as many people watched their homes and over 250,000 people perish during the earthquake on 12th January 2010.

This movement to heal Haiti, through the empowerment of the Haitian Diaspora, is essential and inspirational. Kenbe Fem will allow viewers to observe the formation of partnerships between international communities and discover the embodiment of “knee fem” in action. Join David on the journey. Engage as he rebuilds his mother’s home into Kay Tita, or Tita’s House, a thriving community resource centre that anticipates providing applicable tools for the impoverished community in order for them to become the self-sustained nation they are willed to be.

David Pierre-Louis will be sharing his journey and will be on hand to answer any questions. The duration of the film is 60 minutes and there will be a Q&A after the screening.
